Twee pop in the same vein as Washington contemporaries Beat Happening. Shame it's out of print.

Various Artists - California

Various Artists
California
2006
RRRecords/Troniks/Ground Fault
(Experimental, noise)

Download,
discs 1 & 2 (101.00 mb)
discs 3 & 4 (114.07 mb)
discs 5 & 6 (117.07 mb)
discs 7 & 8 (100.84 mb)
discs 9 & 10 (98.92 mb)

This massive 10 LP box set is the second in a series by RRRecords capturing state-wide noise whose other releases spanned New England and Michigan. The 10 LPs are split, one band per side, making for an output that's roughly half delicate soundscapes and half harsh noise. I'm loathe to describe noise... think of it somewhere between musique concrete and a particularly disasterous car accident.

Shorty - Thumb Days

Shorty
Thumb Days
1993
Gasoline Boost
(Noise rock, alternative)

Download (58.74 mb)

More Midwestern grinding noise guitar characterized by the tinny sort of distortion that seems so frequent in Albini's production. Sounds similar to Midwestern contemporaries like Tar and Killdozer. Essential listening for fans of U.S. Maple.

The stand out track here is "Coopie 'n Me." It's one of Shorty's best and may just be one of the top music videos of all time. It has all the ingredients for greatness: Al Johnson flailing around like a stroke victim, a book of systemic skin disease and guitar breakdowns aplenty.

High Rise II

Squealer
(Noise rock, experimental)

Download (48.22 mb)

Somehow, High Rise is able to channel the tempo of early punk and the sheer energy of psychadelia. The production really makes the album, driving guitarist Munehiro Narita's unrestrained, neurotic riffs and culminating in a catastrophic wave of distortion.

I can't really top Allmusic's asessment: "Like one of Akira Kurosawa's acclaimed Samurai epics cross-pollinated with the type of bludgeoning metal championed by Slayer." Production courtesy of Steve Albini.

Featuring Steve Albini's production and the addition of ex-Boredoms guitarist Tabata. One of the best examples of brutal Japansese noise rock around. Simply tremendous.
